What is the definition of woodworking traditionalist? An annoying person! The assertion that you have a method which is quicker, more accurate, versatile, and strong, than the method they are using, is completely lost on them. Ask them to just try the new method, and they’ll steadfastly refuse. Then ask them how, as traditionalists, they manage to build projects using hand tools, and suddenly the attitude changes, they’ll state how much they love their table saw their band saw, their jointer, their planer….I could go on.
With the advent of the internet and the related proliferation of fake news there is nothing that I find more exasperating than unadulterated b/s. A Doctor friend of mine from the States alerted me to a posting allegedly comparing three systems, the mortise and tenon, the pocket hole and the dowel. The test was, from an engineering point of view absurd. It purported to be a joint strength test, but before beginning the test he referred to the dowel as a “cheap substitute” for the mortise and tenon. In other words A preconceived notion. The test equipment was akin to something out of the “Flintstones” and included ropes, buckets, sand, and two “C”clamps. The tests themselves were not in any way comparative and as such were seriously flawed. Joint strength is directly proportional to accuracy and had Dowelmax been used to form the dowel joint in this exercise the results would have been very different. That is a proven fact!
According to YouTube this erroneous information was viewed by over 200,000 people and I would assume would be believed by many.
I contacted him by e-mail, and made an offer: I’d send him, free of charge, both our systems. A $400.00 value together with our engineered test stand, if he would agree to re-do the video. He refused. I then followed up and said by broadcasting this flawed test he had done our company irreparable damage and that the decent and professional thing to do would be to re-do the test using Dowelmax. The e-mail was never answered. The fact that it was a seriously flawed test did not bother me as much as his obstinate refusal to open his mind to progress, and his weakness and inability to admit he had made a mistake.
With the proliferation of fake news and false advertising, the guy on the street often can’t discern truth from b/s. As a result he doesn’t believe anyone. In one respect this is good but it is of course detrimental to the person seeking to tell the truth.
I can state categorically that all our supervised tests which showed Dowelmax to be the strongest method in common use, were conducted honestly, and all relevant parameters were implemented as close as was possible.
